Our Story
Finding Inspiration throughout Covid-19 Pandemic
Dee Curtis personal struggle with asthma and the lack of affordable activities to support her treatment goals sparked her vision for establishing Urban Cure CIC.
During her Couch to 5K runs along Southchurch sea front, she discovered the vacant Southend Marine Activity Centre and questioned its untapped potential. Inspired by her own struggles and driven by a passion for community engagement, Dee envisioned Urban Cure as a catalyst for empowerment and positive change.
With a vision of transforming Southend Marine Activity Centre into a hub of inclusivity and opportunity, Dee decided to take matters into her own hands, recognising the potential of the dormant Marine Activity Centre to support local community groups to deliver activities for the poorest in the community, she embarked on a mission to establish Urban Cure CIC.
Armed with determination, Dee approached Southend City Council, presenting her proposal to revitalise the Marine Activity Centre. In June 2022 the Southend Marine Activity Centre and Shoeburyness Ness Road Slipway was secured as the first ever public asset to become an Asset of Community Value. This significant milestone marked the beginning of Urban Cure CIC's mission to empower the poorest members of the community.
